Hull City sacked Liam Rosenior on Tuesday, with social media speculation now tipping him to become a candidate for the Sunderland job.

Rosenior leaves Hull City after less than two years in charge, with many deeming his sacking by the Tigers as a very harsh one indeed.

Hull were in 21st place of the Championship table when he took over in late 2022. And he almost steered the club to a play-off finish in the season just concluded, playing some very attractive and effective football along the way.

Since his Hull exit, there’s been growing speculation on social media that he could quickly come into the reckoning for the Sunderland job.

The Black Cats remain without a manager after sacking Michael Beale in February, with Mike Dodds overseeing the first-team until the end of the campaign.

Will Still continues to be heavily linked following his Reims exit at the start of May, with Rene Maric another name being increasingly linked to the Stadium of Light.

But Marco Gabbiadini has now commented on the possibility of Rosenior heading to Wearside this summer.

Marco Gabbiadini comments on Liam Rosenior to Sunderland

Speaking on Total Sport, former Sunderland striker and now BBC pundit Gabbiadini commented on the possibility of Rosenior being interested in the Sunderland job.

Gabbiadini said: “I think the club is enticing for a lot of people. I don’t think it’s a toxic job, but I do think there are some issues at the club that you want clearing up if you are going to come in.

“I think he’s a coach who seems to have a great reputation; everyone you hear who talks about him, how well he conducts himself, his coaching’s good, he’s been involved at Derby [County] beforehand.”

Gabbiadini concluded: “I think he would be interested in the job at Sunderland.”

Why Liam Rosenior might think twice about Sunderland

There’s no doubting that Rosenior is a good coach at Championship level, and that the Sunderland job remains a very attractive one despite the events of this season.

But Rosenior and indeed many other coaches may be deterred by the expectations at Sunderland; Rosenior especially after being dealt a tough hand at Hull City.

The fans and the Sunderland owners want success, and now. But if the coach isn’t given the proper tools to achieve that then it arguably shines more poorly on them than on the club.

So whilst it’s an attractive job with a huge potential upside, Rosenior may think twice about jumping right back into management with Sunderland.

He has a good reputation right now and he’ll want some sort of security about his next challenge, which is something Sunderland might not be able to offer, or at least not in the volumes he might want.
