Another name appears to have joined Danny Rohl is being all but out of the running to become the next Sunderland manager.

Rohl showcased his qualities on the final day of the season with his Sheffield Wednesday side securing a 2-0 win at Sunderland to ensure their Championship safety.

Since, there’s been talks of a new contract for the impressive German coach in South Yorkshire, effectively ruling him out of the running to become the next Sunderland manager.

That, and reports that Rohl has a £5million compensation fee on his head at Sheffield Wednesday.

So the Black Cats’ list of options seems to be steadily dwindling, with another name now all but out of the running to replace Michael Beale at the Stadium of Light this summer.

Rene Maric all but out of Sunderland running

Bayern Munich youth coach Rene Maric has recently been linked with the Sunderland job.

The 31-year-old was formerly part of the set up at Leeds United under Jesse Marsch but now heads Bayern’s U19 side, where he’s been attracting the likes of Sunderland.

Austrian coach Maric sees his contract at Bayern expire this summer. But an emerging report from German outlet TZ says that Bayern are keen to extend his stay beyond this summer.

This follows reports that Maric, who was actually fancied by Sunderland after the club sacked Tony Mowbray last year, isn’t a strong a contender for the job this time round.

So it looks like Maric is all but out of the Sunderland running now.

One manager becoming clear front runner at Sunderland

With Rohl and Maric seemingly no longer in contention, it seems like former Reims boss Will Still is steadily emerging as the front runner for the job.

He’s a long-term target for Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and someone who is now free after he left Reims at the start of May.

But why Sunderland are biding yet more time remains to be seen. Still is still studying for his UEFA Pro License and so the Black Cats may be waiting on him to finish that, or the club may be waiting to see if any new managers become available.

That’s been the case with Liam Rosenior who was sacked by Hull City earlier this month, with online speculation tipping him to be a potentially good fit for Sunderland, though fans have mixed feelings about Rosenior.

Still though looks like the man for Sunderland and it’ll certainly be an interesting appointment if it’s ever made, albeit one with a lot of potential risk given his inexperience.
