Sunderland came up short against Leicester City despite a really close game in which a draw would’ve been fair. In the loss, Dan Neil impressed.

Sunderland will be bitterly disappointed to have not halted Leicester’s run last night as in the game they were extremely competitive.

Possession was balanced, both sides had chances but only one side was able to capitalise on this which has raised questions over whether a new striker is needed at Sunderland.

Ultimately, competing so competitively against the league’s runaway leaders is nothing but a positive sign that the Black Cats will be up there in May.

While there were multiple star performers for Sunderland, one man in particular stood out. This was 21-year-old Dan Neil who was making things happen in defeat.

Dan Neil impresses v Leicester

According to SofaScore, Neil had an excellent game with a rating of 7.5 for the game, while we gave Neil an eight.

Neil made 80 touches which was the most of any Sunderland player on the pitch.

He also ranked first for his side in key passes with three and shots with three as well.

He also created one big chance, while completing 82% of his passes.

Defensively, Neil made three clearances and three tackles which completes a rounded performance.

Sunderland need to bounce back

Despite playing well, the loss meant three-in-a-row for Tony Mowbray‘s side.

This makes Saturday’s game against Norwich vital to win, and if Neil performs as he did on Tuesday, Sunderland should have no problems doing so.

The loss last night saw Sunderland ousted from the play-off spots and down to ninth.

This means a win for Norwich would move them above the Black Cats and potentially into the playoff race themselves.
