Regis Le Bris reveals ‘main idea’ for Sunderland after win vs Stoke City, ‘new dynamic’ needed

Sunderland registered their first win in six matches with a 2-1 victory over Stoke City on Saturday lunchtime, but there is very little time to celebrate.

Regis Le Bris had seen his Sunderland side struggle of late, and all their hard work at the start of the season appeared to be going to waste.

However, a resilient display against Stoke at the Stadium of Light, including two goals for local hero Tommy Watson, secured a vital three points for the home side.

But, Le Bris is keeping his feet on the ground, and outlined what Sunderland need to do next after bagging that win.

Sunderland firmly focused on beating Bristol City now

In his post match press conference (via Sunderland’s official Twitter/X account), Le Bris was asked how the Sunderland squad feel in the wake of the win, and he insisted the main focus is already on the game against Bristol City on Tuesday.

He said: “They want to win again. It’s the main idea in our mind right now. We felt these bad emotions after many games; sometimes we didn’t deserve to win, but the last fixtures were more difficult as we felt it was possible to win but we lost or drew.

“Hopefully now this is the start of a new dynamic, it is a new experience and a new story. But it will be a tough game again, and a new scenario, and we have to reset with confidence and start again.”

Sunderland have a very quick turnaround, with another home game coming up on Tuesday night against Bristol City.

Beat Bristol City and the promotion charge is firmly back on for Sunderland

That win against Stoke puts Sunderland right back in the hunt for the title, and though it won’t be easy to overcome the likes of Leeds United and Sheffield United, the Black Cats simply have to stay in the fight for as long as possible.

The three points sees Sunderland go five clear of fifth-placed Middlesbrough, and if they can take three more from Bristol City in midweek, they’ll be in such a strong position and, most importantly, will be feeling very confident indeed heading into the festive fixtures.

These games against Stoke and Bristol City were crucial for Sunderland, especially in light of their recent poor form. Le Bris’ side needed a lift, and they got just that against Stoke, and will very rightly fancy their chances against another midtable team on Tuesday.

No one expected Sunderland to be where they are right now, but after that phenomenal start to the season, they have to be considered as genuine contenders. All they have to do now, is act like it.
