Patrick Roberts is rapidly becoming a hot topic among Sunderland fans. But not for the right reasons.
Patrick Roberts has long been a player held in high regards. The former Manchester City man was even handpicked by Lionel Messi to have a bright future, but the going is tough right now.
Now in 32 Championship outings in 2024/25, Roberts has scored just twice with five assists. And although Sunderland beat Luton Town 2-0 on Wednesday night, Roberts was again a weak link in the side.
Or at least that’s the view shared by many fans.

Sunderland fans have had enough of Patrick Roberts after Luton Town
Despite the much-needed win over the Hatters, there was frustration at Roberts. “It’s mad how we’re carrying Roberts every game, offers nothing,” said one fan.
Another added: “How many more below average performances do we need to see from Roberts? Most frustrating player this season without doubt.”
Meanwhile, one said of Roberts’ skillset: “Unbelievable on the ball, agile and good at dribbling. Pretty weak and can barely kick the ball off the ground.”
Other said the 28-year-old was having a “stinker” against Luton Town, and that; “Every time Roberts gets the ball the attack breaks down. How he still starts is beyond me.”

Patrick Roberts’ stats for Sunderland vs Luton Town
Roberts didn’t see as much of the ball as his Sunderland teammates on the night, recording 68 touches (7th most), with 37 accurate passes and a completion rate of 86%.
He did make three key passes on the night though. Roberts showed a few brief glimpses of quality in the second half but ultimately goes another game without making that much happen.
Out of five attempted crosses, none were complete. And that sort of sums up another Roberts performance that’s becoming typical of this season.
He just can’t seem to create anything worthwhile in games like he was a couple of seasons ago, so it’s no wonder why Sunderland fans are getting annoyed.
