David Prutton has made his prediction for Michael Beale’s first game in charge at Sunderland.

There is already a lot of pressure on Michael Beale, only days after he was appointed as the Black Cats’ new head coach.

Parting ways with Tony Mowbray was tricky enough for supporters, but welcoming the 43-year-old in his place was not taken very lightly.

Beale has already angered Rangers fans with his comments following his appointment, while he will have to get straight to winning ways if he is to impress his new ‘family’.

Starting his tenure against Coventry City is hard enough, with Sunderland failing to win in any of their last seven meetings. But the Sky Blues currently find themselves in 15th place, while a win could see the hosts return to a play-off position.

David Prutton doesn’t expect Sunderland to kick off their new era with a bang though, with the former midfielder predicting a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Writing for Sky Sports, Prutton said: “Michael Beale takes charge of his first Sunderland game, and already has a battle on his hands to win over a, potentially, sceptical home support. But you can be sure the fans will still get behind their team at the Stadium of Light.

“Coventry took a great point off Leeds last weekend, especially after falling behind, and always fancy themselves against the big hitters in this league. I think they will get another point to take home with them for Christmas.”

Coventry City’s position in the Championship table isn’t the best, but their form has definitely improved in recent weeks.

Mark Robins’ side have won three of their last six matches and have suffered only one defeat in seven, as well as picking up three clean sheets.

What does Michael Beale need to do to win Sunderland over?

Sunderland have the home advantage, but I have a feeling the atmosphere could be a little more unnerved than it should be when a new manager arrives.

A positive run in the festive period is a must for Michael Beale, and kicking it off with a defeat or even a draw this weekend is a big concern.

While the 43-year-old will be focusing on reaching the play-offs this season, his reputation could also depend on next month’s Wear-Tyne derby.

Beale lost four of the six Old Firm derbies during his time at Rangers, but there is no denying that supporters would be a lot more on board with his appointment if he can get one over on Newcastle. Though that is perhaps a much bigger ask than seeing Rangers beat Celtic.
